What are the difference between Visa extension and renewal?

Which visa can be renewed or extended?

This is vary depends on the current Visa category, below are definition of Extension and renewal

Vietnam Visa Extensions

if your current Visa category is C1, then you can extend for 1 more month
If your visa category is a B3 Visa, you can extend for 1or even 3 month.

By the way, when your Visa to Vietnam is extended you can only stay in Vietnam as much as your extension allow you, if you exist from Vietnam then you might apply for a new Visa as your extension will be cancelled
The duration of Visa extension will be shown on your passport with a blue stamp

Vietnam Visa renewal

if you enter to Vietnam with a free Visa (Visa exemption). and if you want to stay longer then you will be asked to renew your Vietnam Visa
